In a significant move to boost the livestock sector, under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and ICAR ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana; KVK Ropar organized a comprehensive training program on pig farming for local farmers/ rural youth from 23-29.7.2024.
During the concluding session Dr Satbir Singh, Deputy Director (Trg) expressed his views that this initiative aims to equip farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to enhance pig production and welfare. He added that the program is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy by increasing the efficiency and productivity of pig farming.
Dr Aparna, Associate Professor (A. Sci.) and technical coordinator of the training shared that the training program covered various aspects of pig farming, including animal health, nutrition, breeding techniques, and welfare standards. One of the key highlights of the program was the focus on efficient waste utilization through biogas and fish feed. Exposure visit to farms of successful pig farmers of KVK and hands-on session on piglet management were conducted that will ensure that farmers can apply the best practices in their pig farming operations. She added that farmers were educated on the importance of maintaining high welfare standards for pigs, which not only improves the quality of the produce but also ensures the well-being of the animals.
Participants expressed their enthusiasm for adoption of the enterprise and gratitude towards KVK. In the end Deputy Director advised the participants to make the best use of KVK online networks of well-informed farmers so as to support each other and share best practices.
