Parthenium awareness week (16-22 August, 2017)

Parthenium hysterophorus also called as Congress grass and gajar booti is an obnoxious alien weed having its origin in Mexico, North and Central America. It was introduced accidently in India along with the wheat grains imported from America under PL-480 scheme during the era of food shortage. First time its plants were noticed in Pune, Maharastra in 1955. This weed is spreading like a wild fire in Punjab with its first entry along roadsides. It has invaded the forest land, pastures and grasslands, fellow lands and kitchen gardens in almost all the districts of the state. To overcome this issue Parthenium Awareness Week was celebrated from 16-22 August, 2017 by KVK, Ropar. The programme of parthenium awareness was commenced from village Haveli Kalan, in block Ropar on 16th August, 2017. The farmers were made aware regarding the ill effects of parthenium weed, which is becoming a worldwide problem. The farmers were also made aware regarding the life cycle and management of this weed through different methods. A campaign was initiated to uproot this obnoxious weed in the village which was continued from 16th to 17th August, 2017. Then the parthenium awareness derive was initiated in the village Mahlan on 18th August, 2017. The farmers were made aware about the effects of this weed on human and animal health, its competition with the cultivating crops. The parthenium awareness derive continued in villages Mahlan and Jhallian Khurd on 19th and 20th August, 2017. Dr. Vipan Kumar Rampal, Deputy Director (Training), KVK, Ropar made aware the farmers about the parthenium plant, which start its life cycle in the month of Feb-March and shows fast growth in the rainy season and can be managed by uprooting at small scale and chemical weed control by using glyphosate at large scale. The involvement of Monsanto and UPL companies who provided the chemical glyphosate needs mentioned. On 21th August 2017 a awareness programme was organized at Govt Secondary High School, Jhallian Khurd, Ropar in collaboration with the Panchayat of the village to make the people of the area and students of the school aware about the harms being caused to human beings, livestock and biodiversity by the dreadful parthenium where more than 150 people/students participated in different activities. On this occasion, Dr Vipan Rampal, Dr Ashok Kumar and Dr Opinder Singh made the participants aware about the management of parthenium by uprooting, release of Mexican beetle and by using gyphosate herbicide. A technical bulletin in Punjabi and English on control of parthenium was also distributed to the participants. A rally was also organized to create awareness about parthenium among public by involving school students and volunteers. The participants carried banners having slogans related to harmful effects and technology to manage parthenium. In the parthenium awareness week large area was covered and about 300 peoples were participated.
